may be a result of our upbringing, the mood that we are in, the place where we are at the time or in fact any combination of these and all kinds of other factors. So I may watch a television programme and enjoy every minute of it and you may hate the same show. But of course, it goes way beyond just how much we enjoy the text. We will actually create a different meaning for it as well.&lt;br /&gt;Reception analysis is all about trying to look at these kinds of differences and to understand&lt;br /&gt;them. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;What reception analysts have found is that factors such as a gender, our place inside&lt;br /&gt;society, and the context of the time we are living in can be enormously important when we&lt;br /&gt;make the meaning or a text.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The best known theorist to tackle this line of thinking is David Morley. His 1980 study of&lt;br /&gt;audience responses to the BBC programme Nationwide was designed to analyse the different&lt;br /&gt;ways in which viewers interpreted media texts. He suggested that audiences tended to fall into&lt;br /&gt;three groups, based on the their different readings of the text.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 0, 51);"&gt;Preferred/dominant reading&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The preferred reading is the reading media producers hope will take from the text. For&lt;br /&gt;example, and advertisement for a McDonalds Big Mac is intended to encourage feelings of&lt;br /&gt;hunger in the audience, and propensity to buy a McDonald’s burger the next time they’re&lt;br /&gt;passing. Assuming the majority of the audience respond by salivating and rubbing their&lt;br /&gt;tummies (!) this is also the dominant reading. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(153, 51, 153);"&gt;Oppositional reading &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Audience members from outside the target audience may reject the preferred reading,&lt;br /&gt;receiving their own alternative message. The health-conscious, anti-globalisation campaigners&lt;br /&gt;and vegetarians will most likely respond to the McDonald’s advert with frustration and&lt;br /&gt;annoyance. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(204, 51, 204);"&gt;Negotiated reading&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ‘third way’ is one in which audiences acknowledge the preferred reading, but modify it to&lt;br /&gt;suit their own values and opinions. A negotiated response to the McDonald’s advert might be&lt;br /&gt;“I love Big Macs – but one a month as a treat is all my figure can stand.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Textual Analysis of 'Spooks' looking at representation of terrorism. Yipeeee! The days are longer, the snow-drops are standing proud and the weather was what I like to call 'Walk in the Park' weather today - sunny yet a little crisp. I feel ready for the challenges of this half-term having enjoyed a few days off with George and hubby. I've seen some fab movies, had a few lie-ins, rested, and tomorrow we are going on Thomas the Tank Engine and having a picnic with friends.  Plus, the Bootfairs start soon and I'm sooooo excited. Finally, whilst writing this TV legends Ant and Dec are performing S-Club 7 and Wham - brilliant. Great Saturday night TV....I love it! &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;It is half-term now and I have just returned from running a Yr 11 Intervention Day at school. It was really successful with fifteen students in attendance but I felt that I was spread too thin given the 'needy' one-to-one nature of the students. Kelsey completed a super print campaign for the NSPCC on neglect and Grant completed his Film Promotion pack. Lots of students completed their evaluations and Charlie came close to writing a full essay on 'Pink's' album. &lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I feel really guilty because I haven't posted any on my planning or reflections for two weeks but I have been soooooooooo busy. We had two snow days that totally disrupted everything on the Monday and Tuesday of Week 5; three major deadlines for year 13 music promos, Year 12 Opening Title Sequences and Year 11 Section B projects. We had a Year 10 Parent Consultation Day and I attended a brilliant ALT Training session at Rowhill Grange on DELPE followed by a meal last Wednesday. We have an advert out for a new Media teacher and I have been negotiating to have Gerry full time after half-term. In addition to this I have been desperately trying to get all of Mr Abiona's Year 10 coursework marked; providing the Year 13's with theoretical frameworks to support them with the writing of their Critical evaluations, completing exam entries, writing reports and dealing with DATA, DATA, DATA!  Of course, I've also been teaching! &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I have had productive meetings with a number of students and their parents who were going off the rails and completed all my feedback to Film students having completed their FS4 Film Presentations. I was thrilled with the standard of these this year and confident that all students bar 1 or 2 will achieve A-C grades. On the Thursday before half-term Langford and Danielle presented and their studies were really well received. Similarly, I was delighted at the standard of music video production work showcased at the Music Promo crit hosted by Leanne last Wednesday. Alan and I offered constructive criticism that was well received by most and a new deadline of MARCH 15TH 2009 was set for second draft of the evaluation and final promo. I am still concerned about Liam who was not involved in this event but am confident having done mentor sessions with all the other students/teams that everyone will rise to the challenge. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Overall, it has been a stressful but hugely creative two weeks. I am looking forward to hosting a Year 12 Crit after half-term and commencing on the new Units in TV Drama with Year 12; the Horror Genre with Year 13 Media ; Gendered Film Year 13 Film and The American Dream FM2 with Year 12 Film (Who I missed for two weeks before half term because of snow and parent's consultation day). &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Over half term I need to write my quota of Year 12 reports; up-date the blog with lots of TV Drama preparation and Horror Film resources; watch some good movies and check the Year 12 blogs for quality of evidence. I also need to prep resources for the OCR conference on March 20th 2009; contact Kemnal regarding the Middle manager training in April and start planning ahead for September 2009. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The week after half-term is going to be busy with Year 9 Options Evening on the Tuesday evening followed by 6th form interviews on Wednesday between 4pm and 5.30pm. There will then be a Department Meeting I need to lead on the Thursday...hmmmm what shall I put on the agenda?&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Ideas: Display, Year 11 (progress, WAFTAS), Gerry's role......I'll add to this when my brain is better functioning (I've just watched LOST and LOST THE PLOT!)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;So here's to half-term. We will focus our attention on the evolution of this guiding myth of American culture by critically watching and discussing two films that offer us a glimpse into America's changing self-conception. Along the way, we will explore the cinema as a powerful cultural medium that both reflects and re-shapes our collective imagination and the trajectory of America's shared cultural history. Could this sentiment be considered the foundation of the American Dream?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Were the immigrants who came to the United States looking for their bit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, their Dream? And what did the desire of the veteran of World War II - to settle down, to have a home, a car and a family - tell us about this evolving Dream? Is the American Dream attainable by all Americans? Would Martin Luther King feel his Dream was attained? Did Malcolm X realize his Dream?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some say, that the American Dream has become the pursuit of material prosperity - that people work more hours to get bigger cars, fancier homes, the fruits of prosperity for their families - but have less time to enjoy their prosperity. Others say that the American Dream is beyond the grasp of the working poor who must work two jobs to insure their family’s survival. I have been so overwhelmed with meetings, data analysis, Year 11 predictions, re-sit preparation, marking and problem solving with students getting themselves into a pickle. As a result I haven't had time to document my planning on the 'Poodle' so am now writing in retrospect. &lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(102, 0, 204);"&gt;Tuesday: &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Had to cancel A/S Film because a number of students were still NOT up to date &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;with the FM2 case study work. Josie, Luke and Callum have not yet started; Ruby &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;and Aaron have made a start but dramatic improvements are required. Tara and &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;Jake are both up to date. I had originally planned for class to work in two groups &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;on constructing an essay around 'Hollywood' case studies but I felt that the case &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;study work was so weak that this was not yet possible. I set the essay for H/Work &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;due in next Tuesday via blogs or written. (NO LUKE)&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Period 5: &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Media Clinic - 1st one: No Takers&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;After School: Business Enterprise Meeting Cancelled but met up with Sam and Jess Parker who agreed to continue with the initiative. Others included = Jamie, Callum, Jake and &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;Tara. I decided to focus on the &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt;   &lt;/span&gt;evaluation and embedding of DELPE. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(51, 0, 51);"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;Thursday:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt; &lt;span class="Apple-tab-span" style="white-space:pre"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Cancelled all Year 13 classes because of Media and Film re-sits. I didn't get an opportunity to blog my lesson plans on Thursday evening, so here is a reflection on the days events: &lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Period 1/2 : A'level Media Critical Research Mock&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Students sitting mock exam x 2 Hours. No Grant or Aaron. I will need to chase these students next week as sitting this mock is crucial to my assessment of their potential performance in the real exam in two weeks. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Period 3: GCSE Year 10 Media &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The usual suspects once again behaved in a manner that was wholly inappropriate and disrupted the learning of others. Mr Abiona is phoning home to negotiate meetings with parents next week. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Students finished working on their mind-maps exploring music genres and the music industry and started the process of developing a set of questions that would form their audience research. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Homework: To create and distribute a questionnaire to ten people about their music tastes and habits. Results from research to be drawn-up in their sketch books by next FRIDAY. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;LUNCH: Business Enterprise Meeting with Dave Mitchell. Only Callum and Sam attended and Dave was rather frustrated. He expressed his concerns and requested a meeting with all students on Tuesday at 3.00pm. &lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(102, 0, 0);"&gt;I MUST GIVE A NOTICE IN ASSEMBLY ON MONDAY AND GET A NOTICE UP TO STUDENTS IN COMMON ROOM. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: rgb(102, 0, 0); font-weight: bold;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Period 5: Support in Science with Mr Shode&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I used this patrol time to visit Mr Shode in Science and to monitor his implementation of my ideas we explored at the outset of the week. The lesson was chaotic and would have been given an OFSTED Level 1 as no learning was evident. The issues that appear to be dominating Mr Shode's practise are: behaviour management; pace; voice and presence. I suggested to G Gill that one possible strategy could be to move the class to my room next Friday and for me to negotiate access to the ICT room. Both questions will have an emphasis on the relationship between aspects of the films' narrative in relation to generic characteristics. The first question will be based primarily on narrative study. The second will be based on contextual study. Issues of representation will be common to both questions. Since this is a comparative study, the two films selected should enable sufficient comparison and contrast to be made. One way of ensuring this is to select films made at different historical moments. I have always used my teacher planner creatively but now feel the need to move into the realms of NMT to plan lessons and document my reflections on learning and teaching. Since setting up both 'The Noodle' and 'Doodle' for my students at Welling, I have become a blog addict and love the interactivity this method affords.
