We all decode the texts that we encounter in individual ways which may be a result of our upbringing, the mood that we are in, the place where we are at the time or in fact any combination of these and all kinds of other factors. So I may watch a television programme and enjoy every minute of it and you may hate the same show. But of course, it goes way beyond just how much we enjoy the text. We will actually create a different meaning for it as well.
Reception analysis is all about trying to look at these kinds of differences and to understand
them.

What reception analysts have found is that factors such as a gender, our place inside
society, and the context of the time we are living in can be enormously important when we
make the meaning or a text.

The best known theorist to tackle this line of thinking is David Morley. His 1980 study of
audience responses to the BBC programme Nationwide was designed to analyse the different
ways in which viewers interpreted media texts. He suggested that audiences tended to fall into
three groups, based on the their different readings of the text.

Preferred/dominant reading
The preferred reading is the reading media producers hope will take from the text. For
example, and advertisement for a McDonalds Big Mac is intended to encourage feelings of
hunger in the audience, and propensity to buy a McDonald’s burger the next time they’re
passing. Assuming the majority of the audience respond by salivating and rubbing their
tummies (!) this is also the dominant reading.

Oppositional reading
Audience members from outside the target audience may reject the preferred reading,
receiving their own alternative message. The health-conscious, anti-globalisation campaigners
and vegetarians will most likely respond to the McDonald’s advert with frustration and
annoyance.

Negotiated reading
The ‘third way’ is one in which audiences acknowledge the preferred reading, but modify it to
suit their own values and opinions. A negotiated response to the McDonald’s advert might be
“I love Big Macs – but one a month as a treat is all my figure can stand.”

Textual Analysis of 'Spooks' looking at representation of terrorism. Each group to look at one of the four elements and feedback to class with a set of notes. Share example of essay on blog and then move groups around with teams working collaboratively on the development of an opening paragraph that uses the technique of 3XA - Explain, Expand, Exemplify, Evaluate Effect on reading/interpretation.

It feels like Spring has arrived! Yipeeee! The days are longer, the snow-drops are standing proud and the weather was what I like to call 'Walk in the Park' weather today - sunny yet a little crisp. I feel ready for the challenges of this half-term having enjoyed a few days off with George and hubby. I've seen some fab movies, had a few lie-ins, rested, and tomorrow we are going on Thomas the Tank Engine and having a picnic with friends. Plus, the Bootfairs start soon and I'm sooooo excited. Finally, whilst writing this TV legends Ant and Dec are performing S-Club 7 and Wham - brilliant. Great Saturday night TV....I love it! VOTE DEC.

It is half-term now and I have just returned from running a Yr 11 Intervention Day at school. It was really successful with fifteen students in attendance but I felt that I was spread too thin given the 'needy' one-to-one nature of the students. Kelsey completed a super print campaign for the NSPCC on neglect and Grant completed his Film Promotion pack. Lots of students completed their evaluations and Charlie came close to writing a full essay on 'Pink's' album.

I feel really guilty because I haven't posted any on my planning or reflections for two weeks but I have been soooooooooo busy. We had two snow days that totally disrupted everything on the Monday and Tuesday of Week 5; three major deadlines for year 13 music promos, Year 12 Opening Title Sequences and Year 11 Section B projects. We had a Year 10 Parent Consultation Day and I attended a brilliant ALT Training session at Rowhill Grange on DELPE followed by a meal last Wednesday. We have an advert out for a new Media teacher and I have been negotiating to have Gerry full time after half-term. In addition to this I have been desperately trying to get all of Mr Abiona's Year 10 coursework marked; providing the Year 13's with theoretical frameworks to support them with the writing of their Critical evaluations, completing exam entries, writing reports and dealing with DATA, DATA, DATA! Of course, I've also been teaching!

I have had productive meetings with a number of students and their parents who were going off the rails and completed all my feedback to Film students having completed their FS4 Film Presentations. I was thrilled with the standard of these this year and confident that all students bar 1 or 2 will achieve A-C grades. On the Thursday before half-term Langford and Danielle presented and their studies were really well received. Similarly, I was delighted at the standard of music video production work showcased at the Music Promo crit hosted by Leanne last Wednesday. Alan and I offered constructive criticism that was well received by most and a new deadline of MARCH 15TH 2009 was set for second draft of the evaluation and final promo. I am still concerned about Liam who was not involved in this event but am confident having done mentor sessions with all the other students/teams that everyone will rise to the challenge.

Overall, it has been a stressful but hugely creative two weeks. I am looking forward to hosting a Year 12 Crit after half-term and commencing on the new Units in TV Drama with Year 12; the Horror Genre with Year 13 Media ; Gendered Film Year 13 Film and The American Dream FM2 with Year 12 Film (Who I missed for two weeks before half term because of snow and parent's consultation day).

Over half term I need to write my quota of Year 12 reports; up-date the blog with lots of TV Drama preparation and Horror Film resources; watch some good movies and check the Year 12 blogs for quality of evidence. I also need to prep resources for the OCR conference on March 20th 2009; contact Kemnal regarding the Middle manager training in April and start planning ahead for September 2009.

The week after half-term is going to be busy with Year 9 Options Evening on the Tuesday evening followed by 6th form interviews on Wednesday between 4pm and 5.30pm. There will then be a Department Meeting I need to lead on the Thursday...hmmmm what shall I put on the agenda?

Ideas: Display, Year 11 (progress, WAFTAS), Gerry's role......I'll add to this when my brain is better functioning (I've just watched LOST and LOST THE PLOT!)

So here's to half-term. Yipeeeeee!

Unit Purpose
This is a comparative study of Hollywood films that have sought to depict 'The American Dream' either by constructing or deconstructing it. It will endeavour to provide students with opportunities to interpret and analyse the images, discourses, stories and practices related to pursuing the American Dream as they are represented in the powerful cultural medium of film.

Detailed Course Description:

They live by it. We seek it. But ...what is it? How has this ideal shaped American culture? How has it evolved over the years? What has Hollywood done with it? This half term we will focus on a on two films that can be understood as reflecting on the evolution of the "American Dream". We will focus our attention on the evolution of this guiding myth of American culture by critically watching and discussing two films that offer us a glimpse into America's changing self-conception. Along the way, we will explore the cinema as a powerful cultural medium that both reflects and re-shapes our collective imagination and the trajectory of America's shared cultural history. And we will strive to increase our collective cinematic literacy.

Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes. You will:
Develop a greater degree of cinematic literacy by studying the art, language and criticism of film;
Employ, in conversation and in writing, an extensive vocabulary of terms related to the study of film;
Develop ways to critically view, interpret, analyse, and write about the intersections between film and the American Dream;

Demonstrate a richer understanding of various writings and theoretical frameworks connected to these intersections.

The films to be studied will be:

American Beauty, Land of the Dead, Fight Club, Pursuit of Happiness

With clips beinf shown from a variety of films.

There will be some critical examination of films that promote the dream before we deconstruct those that serve to challenge and subvert it and represent the 'alienation' caused by this guiding ideological framework.

What is the American Dream?

The term was first used by James Truslow Adams in his book The Epic of America which was written in 1931. He states: "The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."

In the United States’ Declaration of Independence, the founding fathers: "…held certain truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness." Could this sentiment be considered the foundation of the American Dream?

Were the immigrants who came to the United States looking for their bit of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, their Dream? And what did the desire of the veteran of World War II - to settle down, to have a home, a car and a family - tell us about this evolving Dream? Is the American Dream attainable by all Americans? Would Martin Luther King feel his Dream was attained? Did Malcolm X realize his Dream?

Some say, that the American Dream has become the pursuit of material prosperity - that people work more hours to get bigger cars, fancier homes, the fruits of prosperity for their families - but have less time to enjoy their prosperity. Others say that the American Dream is beyond the grasp of the working poor who must work two jobs to insure their family’s survival. Yet others look toward a new American Dream with less focus on financial gain and more emphasis on living a simple, fulfilling life.

Thomas Wolfe said, "…to every man, regardless of his birth, his shining, golden opportunity ….the right to live, to work, to be himself, and to become whatever thing his manhood and his vision can combine to make him."

Girls Aloud Focus Case Study with Year 10's this week

This has been such a busy and eventful week in the Media Department. I have been so overwhelmed with meetings, data analysis, Year 11 predictions, re-sit preparation, marking and problem solving with students getting themselves into a pickle. As a result I haven't had time to document my planning on the 'Poodle' so am now writing in retrospect.

Tuesday: Had to cancel A/S Film because a number of students were still NOT up to date with the FM2 case study work. Josie, Luke and Callum have not yet started; Ruby and Aaron have made a start but dramatic improvements are required. Tara and Jake are both up to date. I had originally planned for class to work in two groups on constructing an essay around 'Hollywood' case studies but I felt that the case study work was so weak that this was not yet possible. I set the essay for H/Work due in next Tuesday via blogs or written. (NO LUKE)

Period 5: Media Clinic - 1st one: No Takers

After School: Business Enterprise Meeting Cancelled but met up with Sam and Jess Parker who agreed to continue with the initiative. Others included = Jamie, Callum, Jake and Tara. Agreed to set-up a blog in order to communicate with each other and I agreed to ask charlotte about chocolate to sell to staff.

Wednesday: No Leanne Today - Out on Fast Track Training - P5 Year 11 to be covered ALT after school today - focus on ALT projects. I decided to focus on the evaluation and embedding of DELPE.

Thursday: Cancelled all Year 13 classes because of Media and Film re-sits. A/S Film in the morning and A/S Media in the afternoon. Worked with Tom P1 to set-up a focused plan to get through two A'levels. He has dropped Media and is now focusing on Film and Drama.

P2 Worked on marking of Critical Research mock exam papers to give back to A'Level students on Friday morning.

P3 Met with Si Pui to look at Presentation Script draft

P4 Dealt with Jade F in Mr Abiona's class over printing of offensive posters.

Writing up new predicted grades for Year 11's

P5 Year 10 Media 'Girls Aloud' construction of Identity lesson. Students look at case study materials and then research to collect examples of band/artist and how their image has been constructed to appeal to wide demographic. Only 10 students because of Science exam.

Hooray! I made it through the first week. I didn't get an opportunity to blog my lesson plans on Thursday evening, so here is a reflection on the days events:

Period 1/2 : A'level Media Critical Research Mock

Students sitting mock exam x 2 Hours. No Grant or Aaron. I will need to chase these students next week as sitting this mock is crucial to my assessment of their potential performance in the real exam in two weeks.

Period 3: GCSE Year 10 Media

The usual suspects once again behaved in a manner that was wholly inappropriate and disrupted the learning of others. Mr Abiona is phoning home to negotiate meetings with parents next week.

Students finished working on their mind-maps exploring music genres and the music industry and started the process of developing a set of questions that would form their audience research.

Homework: To create and distribute a questionnaire to ten people about their music tastes and habits. Results from research to be drawn-up in their sketch books by next FRIDAY.

LUNCH: Business Enterprise Meeting with Dave Mitchell. Only Callum and Sam attended and Dave was rather frustrated. He expressed his concerns and requested a meeting with all students on Tuesday at 3.00pm. I MUST GIVE A NOTICE IN ASSEMBLY ON MONDAY AND GET A NOTICE UP TO STUDENTS IN COMMON ROOM.

Period 5: Support in Science with Mr Shode

I used this patrol time to visit Mr Shode in Science and to monitor his implementation of my ideas we explored at the outset of the week. The lesson was chaotic and would have been given an OFSTED Level 1 as no learning was evident. The issues that appear to be dominating Mr Shode's practise are: behaviour management; pace; voice and presence. I suggested to G Gill that one possible strategy could be to move the class to my room next Friday and for me to negotiate access to the ICT room. I will do my best to support here but the class is deeply disaffected and a great deal of intervention required to aid learning.

Arghhhhh! It's Thursday - 5 Periods and two meetings after school! Yipee! Oh well here goes:

Period 1/2: Year 13 Media
Students have 2 weeks to finalise their preparations for the Critical Research paper. In this lesson I will:

1. Tell students about expectations for the term ahead and refer to key dates on The Noodle
2. Hand back mock papers and give constructive feedback and broad areas for improvement.
3. Go through 2 A Grade examples to support students in realising their potential.
4. Hand out 'Advanced Pop Music Evaluation' sheets and encourage those students who achieved A and B grades in mock to now focus on music promo completion and evaluation.
5. Give students lesson time to pursue independent work on music promos; critical research; evals or research and planning books.

Period 3/4: A'level Film Studies

Period 5: Year 10 Media - ICT Room
Students working on new project 'Music promotion'. Today, the focus is on students creating their own 'My Music' profile to cover all aspects of their music consumption. Full objectives and exemplar resources on flipchart.

Section C: US Cinema Comparative Study (40 marks)
One question from a choice of two.
Candidates are required to compare and contrast two films either from the same genre or dealing with a specific theme. Both questions will have an emphasis on the relationship between aspects of the films' narrative in relation to generic characteristics. The first question will be based primarily on narrative study. The second will be based on contextual study. Issues of representation will be common to both questions. Since this is a comparative study, the two films selected should enable sufficient comparison and contrast to be made. One way of ensuring this is to select films made at different historical moments. There are no prescribed films for this section.
The following are indicative if a historical approach is adopted:

It is also possible to study remakes such as:

Year 12 Media Studies: Foundation Production Lesson

This double lesson is dedicated to final preparations for the Film Shoots that will take place next week. The expectation is that students will spend one-day on location filming the necessary rushes for their opening title sequences. The timetable will be announced on the blog after negotiations in the lesson later this week. I NEED TO TALK WITH ALAN AND GERRY BEFORE FIRMING THESE UP WITH STUDENTS. The students will spend today's lesson preparing a 'Shooting Schedule' that offers detailed information about their shoot and timings of the day. This will need to be submitted by Friday for final scrutiny.

Welcome to my 'Planning Poodle' - a space where I can share what's going on in my 'Noodle', showcase my teaching and learning 'Doodles' (my mind-maps and post-it conversations with myself) and document all of my planning for school. I have always used my teacher planner creatively but now feel the need to move into the realms of NMT to plan lessons and document my reflections on learning and teaching. Since setting up both 'The Noodle' and 'Doodle' for my students at Welling, I have become a blog addict and love the interactivity this method affords. I am really excited about starting a planning blog and very much hope that what starts off life as a 'hunch' will become integral to my learning and teaching of Media and Film Studies.
